Here’s Where to Begin: 18 GMO Foods to Remove from Your Diet
Do not panic after reading this list wondering what you are going to eat! Trust me, there are affordable options that are readily available today in most grocery stores that are glyphosate free Non-GMO.
Aspartame is a chemical that causes neurotoxicity. Once ingested, the body breaks aspartame down into methanol which is converted into formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is a toxic and hazardous substance that should not be ingested. If you like drinking Diet Sodas, please rethink that choice. Aspartame is a chemical made in a lab and it tops any list of foods and ingredients to avoid!
Corn is in everything. Don’t just think corn on the cob. Antibiotics, Candy, Aspirin, Cosmetics, Pharmaceutical Drugs, Bakery goods, salad dressings, gum, canned vegetables, beer and too many others to list them all.
Regular dietary consumption of GMO corn leads to serious health problems and seriously affects the kidney and liver (which are your detoxifying organs), as well as in the heart, adrenal glands, and spleen. READ THE LABELS.
3. HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup)
HFCS is made from corn, which is a GMO strain. HFCS starts as a GMO, contains mercury, and has been linked to weight gain and Type II diabetes. READ THE LABELS. This poison is in everything.
Soybeans are the most prevalent GMO products in fields today. You may not be eating tofu but chances are pretty good that your bottled salad dressing or any oil based product has soy in it. Soy has been associated with a wide range of health problems and GMO soy has been linked to pancreatic, liver, kidney and heart problems. READ THE LABELS.
5. Corn Starch
Corn starch is a highly processed corn product made from corn – genetically modified (GM) corn. It offers no nutritional value and carries all the dangers associated with GMO foods. It is used as an additive in many products and as a processed food, it creates digestive problems. You don’t need to thicken your gravy with cornstarch. Use arrowroot instead. READ THE LABELS.
Yes, there are genetically modified tomatoes. In fact, tomatoes were one of the first crops to be genetically modified. These tomatoes look super delicious because they are covered with Roundup. They are also nutritionally deficient and contain minimal antioxidants. Always choose Non-GMO or organic.
Most sausage contains corn syrup or corn syrup solids, in addition to the other preservatives. That’s right, the hot dog or Italian sausage you enjoy – even just once in awhile – contains a GMO. If you choose to eat sausage of any type, choose one that says Non-GMO. Most sausage has HFCS, corn syrup, and cornstarch, plus rBGH.
8. Ice Cream
Unless the brand of ice cream or any dairy produce is organic, they most likely contain plenty of genetically-modified DNA and bovine growth hormones. I found organic Alden’s Ice Cream at Lucky’s on sale for $3.99. Breyers has a Non-GMO line.
9. Non-organic and Synthetic Vitamins
Many vitamins, including top children’s vitamins, use ‘vegetable’ products as a base for the vitamin. Many of these ‘vegetables’ come from corn and soy products; many also contain aspartame and hydrogenated oils. Always buy vitamins that are organic or non-GMO. Most Vitamin C is made from GMO corn.
10. Infant Formula
Milk that contains rBGH and genetically modified soy constitute the foundation for most infant formulas unless they specifically state they are organic. Research has found that infant diets including formulas that contain these GMOs contribute to chronic, long-term health conditions.
Most beef feed contains GMO alfalfa, corn, and soy. When cows eat GMOs, they get into their system and become part of the meat. If you’re going to eat beef, only consume organic, grass-fed beef.
You have probably heard of Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH) that is injected into cows to increase milk output. You can buy organic milk, grass fed or Meyenberg goat milk and avoid bovine growth hormones. However, to keep all bovine growth hormones out of the diet and GMO grain, you also need to look for the Non-GMO label and watch out for foods that contain milk products, as these may come from hormone-injected cows.
13. Vegetable Oil
Vegetable Oil typically comes from corn, soybean, cotton, or canola oils. All of these crops have been genetically modified to withstand being doused by Roundup. Unless the vegetable oil states it is organic, assume it may contain some degree of GMOs.
14. Canola Oil
Canola oil gets its own category due to its prevalent use. Aside from questions about an oil made from a plant toxic to human consumption, the rapeseed has been genetically altered. As of 2009, 90% of Canada’s rapeseed crop was ‘herbicide-tolerant’. When it comes to cooking oils, the best option is to find products specifically designated non-GMO.
15. Margarine and Shortening
These are another form of vegetable oil and contain all the GMO problems the vegetable oils contain. To avoid GMOs from margarine, organic butter is the best option.
16. Hawaiian Papaya
Look for Papaya grown anywhere other than Hawaii.
Many squash varieties have been genetically modified to fight off the diseases that can affect them. When it comes to squash, buy organic.
This is so sad. GMO flax has been grown (illegally, for what it’s worth) in Canada. Please check the ingredient source of the flax you are eating. This made me also think that if you buy a product that contains flax or any of the ingredients mentioned above, and it doesn’t say: NO GMOs, it is genetically modified.
OVERWHELMED? GREAT! I wish someone had told me this way back in the 90’s when GMO foods first hit the grocery shelves.
I want to help. Email me your questions. Here is a great link to begin studying about GMO’s. Please don’t be overwhelmed by it, just become educated on it. GMO’s are dangerous and they are the cause of the majority of all illness.
I’d love for you to SAY NO TO GMO!
