Life is one big road with lots of signs. So when you’re riding through the ruts, don’t complicate your mind. Flee from hate, mischief, and jealousy. Don’t bury your thoughts, put your vision to reality. Wake Up and Live! -Bob Marley
“What’s your sign?” That was a popular question years ago. Some people still ask it as a way to get to know someone they’ve just met. You may also have heard, “Here’s your sign.” performed by Bill Engvall, or “Signs”, sung by the Canadian rock group, Five Man Electrical Band.
There’s a “stop sign” sign north of our driveway. It’s not a stop sign, it’s simply a sign posted to warn people of the stop sign at the end of the street, a sign to let you know a sign is coming. In the past, several people didn’t stop at that intersection and got seriously injured, so a stop sign sign was installed. Like other traffic signs, it is there to help keep people safe. Sometimes we are given signs that signs are coming.
Last week I noticed that the leaves on my tomato plant had been chewed, but I didn’t pay much attention to it. A few days later, more leaves were gone, and several of the tomatoes had bites taken out of them. THEN I paid attention. I thoroughly examined the plant and found a big, fat worm and several smaller ones. They are no longer on my plant. If I had continued to overlook the signs of the worms’ presence, my plant would have soon been gone.
That made me wonder what other signs in my life I’m ignoring. Do I notice when my clothes are a little snugger because I’ve been snacking more than usual or eating foods high in calories and low in nutritional value? Have I been more cranky lately because I’m not getting enough sleep? Are there projects I wanted to do this month that got set aside and forgotten?
When we pay attention, we see subtle signs all around us: dark clouds could signify rain is on the way, a squirrel fussing may tell you where your cat is hiding in the yard, and quiet in the other room usually means it’s time to check on your family.
A new month is just around the corner, so it’s the perfect time to take a moment or two and think about the signs in your life and choose what you want to learn from them.
So, what’s your sign? What is happening in your life that is indicating it’s time for a change?
Signing off for now,
