Be willing to step outside your comfort zone once in a while; take the risks in life that seem worth taking. The ride might not be as predictable if you’d just planted your feet and stayed put, but it will be a heck of a lot more interesting. Edward Whitacre, Jr.
Ever feel like you’re taking one step forward and two steps back? It’s very frustrating, isn’t it? Just when everything seems to be falling into place, it starts to fall apart. But sometimes what seems like a setback may be the very thing that inspires you to adjust your course and reach your next breakthrough.
REVIEW WHERE YOU ARE AND WHY
Are you tired? You may have been so focused on reaching your goal that you’ve forgotten to take care of yourself. Are you getting enough rest? Are you eating well? Are you moving and stretching your body?
Are you frustrated at your lack of progress? Pushing on until you accomplish your goal can be very difficult if you only look at how far you are from the finish line. Many times it helps to look at how far you’ve already come. Remember to celebrate milestones, no matter how small.
Are you stuck? Feeling stuck can be seen as a dead end or an opportunity to think about where you are and see what to continue and what to change. Find a quiet spot and take 5 minutes to write down the positive and negative things that you are facing right now. Celebrate the positives and think about ways to modify the negatives so they become positives.
If you stay in your comfort zone, you probably won’t make much progress. We often learn more from the challenges in our lives. Just as our muscles are strengthened through resistance training, we can become better at solving problems in our lives when we face them and think of possible solutions. The more we do it, the better we will get at it.
Remember: An optimist is someone who figures that taking a step backward after taking a step forward is not a disaster, it’s more like a cha-cha.
Here’s to a life full of happy steps!
