Itis means inflammation and inflammation is prevalent in our bodies without us even being aware of it. Arthritis, both Rheumatoid and Osteoarthritis, are common forms of arthritis characterized by painful, stiff joints and chronic inflammation, which will worsen as we age and become totally debilitating. Osteoarthritis is caused by physical wear and tear on the joints and joint tissue. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease where the body attacks the tissue of the joints. With Rheumatoid arthritis, you will notice a sudden onset, with swelling and pain on both sides of your body. Osteoarthritis often starts on one side of the body and may eventually migrate to both sides. It usually attacks your weight bearing joints, like your knees, hip, and spine. This information will target osteoarthritis even though the information is beneficial for both forms.
This may seem like crazy advice but the first thing I recommend you doing is to…
TAKE A LONG WALK – or maybe just a short one but get out there and walk. Walking helps in so many ways. Walk by yourself and choose a peaceful location where you can think about “YOU”. Seriously, this is a very important step in the right direction towards any type of healing. You see, my dear Friend, it’s your Arthritis, therefore you are responsible for it.
DO NOT LOOK ELSEWHERE FOR A SOLUTION. It’s so easy to blame your heredity, old age, or the weather for our arthritis but the bottom line is it is your body and your body’s arthritis. Take time on this long walk to understand that stiffness and pain in your joints is there to warn you that something is wrong. The idea here is to not accept the wrong but to figure out what to do to make it right.
You make choices every day that most definitely determine your wellness level. It’s your body and it’s the only one you are going to get, so today you must switch your thinking and learn what will actually help to heal you.
Medications allow you to continue functioning but prevent you from being able to keep in touch with your body’s messages. If you can’t feel the pain, it will become more difficult to get to the root of your initial discomfort, and you won’t know whether your body is healing properly or not. Medication always causes some degree of side effects. The side effects cause more side effects.
The very good news is that YOUR BODY IS FORGIVING and it is a self-healing machine. It forgives easily and regenerates itself but only if given the right nourishment.
You have some choices to make and here they are. My friend, you can completely ignore your body’s warning signs that it needs your help and hope it’ll go away. You can take a prescription medication and suppress your body’s warning signs that it needs your help or you can take responsibility for your body and help it to regain its well-being.
WHAT IF YOU CHOOSE one of the first two options? It is very important to know that if you choose the first or second option you could be on a path to more serious injury, or your current problem with arthritis could lead to chronic pain or the inability to move at all. Arthritis is chronic inflammation so understanding how chronic inflammation occurs is important. Inflammation is your body’s response to injury or infection and triggers the body to go into a healing mode. This inflammation, if not healed can result in damage to other body organs particularly the heart. The point to ponder here is that your arthritis is not just stiff painful joints, but arthritis is inflammation that could lead to more serious health complications especially if you are masking your pain with medication.
HERE ARE THE TOP THREE CAUSES OF ARTHRITIS?
1. A plant deficient diet which may or may not have resulted in an unhealthy body weight.
2. Stress and how you respond to it.
3. Lack of exercise
Let’s take a minute to dig a little deeper to understand arthritis. Believe it or not, one of the main root causes of inflammation for most people originates in the gut. Digestion issues are the cause of a lot of diseases. The simple solution is to avoid problem food (foods that cause you to bloat, have gas, belch, upset stomach, allergic reactions or nausea). My advice is to eat non-inflammatory foods, herbs, and spices that contain powerful phytonutrients and antioxidants which can stop the inflammation in the digestive tract, joints, heart, and skin. Phytonutrients are compounds found only in plants that aren’t classified as either vitamins or minerals, but that have a beneficial healing effect on your health. (Phyto is a Greek word for plant).
THE HEALING POWER OF WHOLE FOODS – It is crucial that you focus your meals around plants that your body will benefit from on your path towards an arthritis-free body. Arthritis and a surprisingly large amount of your health problems may be eliminated just by switching to a plant-based diet. Make sure you are incorporating these non-inflammatory foods into your meals: beets, leeks, onions, green beans, Sweet Potato, avocado, asparagus, Bok Choy, garlic, onions, celery, cucumbers, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, collards, kale, leafy greens/lettuces, carrots, root vegetables, squash, sea vegetables (dulse and kelp), gluten free grains like amaranth, millet, quinoa, brown rice and wild rice, sesame, flax, chia, hemp, pumpkin seeds, coconut oil and olive oil. Fruits are also very healing because they are high in minerals, vitamins, antioxidants and fiber. Choose organic when it is available and vibrant looking.
This is obviously not an exhaustive list, but it’ll give you a good start. Always keep the healing plant in as close to its original state as possible when preparing it. Eat them raw, steamed or roasted as to reap as many healing benefits as possible.
Here is a great link to give you a more detailed list of anti-inflammatory foods.
It is also very important to include turmeric in your everyday diet. Please take the time to read the post I wrote on the about the amazing healing properties of turmeric. I don’t go a day without it.
