Is it Real life or Is It Just Fantasy?
Is there something you’ve always wanted to do? A dream, a vision, a fantasy?
We’ve been told:
If you can dream it, you can do it. – Tom Fitzgerald
(which by the way is often attributed to Walt Disney)
Is that true?
When we think about the things on our “bucket”, “someday”, or “when I retire” list. . . how much of it will we really do?
The most obvious answer is “NONE OF IT” if we never take a step in that direction.
Will the results of our actions equal the picture we have in our head? Probably not. Life is not picture perfect, is it?
When you take your first step toward a dream and you step into a mess, do you quit? It’s tempting, but if you persist, and learn to adjust and adapt as you pursue your goals, you may find that you didn’t reach your original goal – you ended up in a much better place!
So, how do you keep going when you get stuck? Try looking at what’s happening from a different angle. Author Todd Henry in his book: Louder Than Words recommends that you ask yourself questions like this:
- Do I know why I’m stuck?
- What do I fear?
- What would happen if I do the opposite of what I have been doing?
- What are my options?
- How can I make this fun?
- How would a child resolve this? (You might ask them if there’s one handy.) And my favorite:
- Is there someone who will help me?
I don’t mean someone you can call who will do the work, but someone who will help you do the work. Do you have a friend or two who would meet you for coffee or tea and help you walk through your options?
I find it valuable to have someone to discuss my projects and ideas with, and I’m more than willing to return the favor. You might even want to consider having regular meetings with a few friends so you can encourage each other as you make your dreams a reality.
You may not achieve the dreams you started with, but I think you’ll have a great time on your journey!
Goodbye (to being stuck),
